2017/01 – Saturday Day retreat: Cultivating an Open Heart

The idea of living a connected and compassionate life appeals to us, but we often find it difficult to meet the challenges of our daily lives with an open and caring heart and mind. It is easy to feel lost and forget that we care when faced with the issues in our lives, our relationships, the political environment, and the suffering in the world. When we are hurt or fearful, we may find ourselves acting or reacting from well-established patterns that feel unskillfully rooted. It is possible to cultivate a mind and heart that meet the world with care and compassion. We must first be able to meet our own selves this way, and only then can we radiate this out into the world. As the heart opens, we find peace, freedom and connection. This daylong program will focus on cultivating a limitless heart by working at the very root of what it is that keeps the heart closed – resistance to what is. We will explore compassion as the process of opening to our resistance. As we open to our resistance, we open to what is true in this moment, and find our open heart – a heat that is unburdened by the past, a heart that meets the suffering of the world rather than shutting down to it, a limitless heart that lives in peace, freedom, connection and skillful action.
